Sharp money vs public money. How to read the line.

Steam moves, reverse line movement, public-fade traps. The signal-reading playbook NuroPicks runs on every Pro and Elite pick before fire time.

Plain-English answer

Sharp money and public money push sportsbook lines in opposite directions at different speeds. Sharps fire fast inside the first hour after a market opens, books reprice toward the sharp side, and the line settles before retail wakes up. Public money piles in later, usually on the favorite or the over, and books shade the price further to balance their book. Reverse line movement is the cleanest sharp signal: when 75 percent of tickets are on team A but the line still moves toward team B, the sharp dollars are on team B. NuroPicks ships ticket-percent and money-percent splits on every Pro and Elite pick so you can spot reverse line movement in real time. The fade is not the public team itself, the fade is retail piling into stale numbers after sharps have already moved the market.

Three line-movement patterns, three different reads

PatternWhat it looks likeSharp read
Steam moveLine moves 1 to 2 points across 3+ books inside 10 minutes, usually within the first hour after open.Sharp syndicates fired the same side at multiple books at once. The new line is closer to fair than the open. Chasing late on retail books is usually too late, but a slow book that has not moved is a stale-line window.
Reverse line movementPublic ticket count is 70 to 80 percent on team A, but the line moves toward team B by half a point or more.Sharp dollars outweigh retail tickets. The book is shading the price against the public to protect itself. The fade target is team A, not the public sentiment.
Public chasingTicket count and dollar count both pile on the same side, line drifts with the public from open to close on retail books only.Books are absorbing public action and shading the closer side a tick further. Pinnacle and Circa rarely chase here. The fade window is the gap between sharp books and retail books at the closing bell.

Worked example

Tuesday 7:00 PM ET. Warriors at Rockets, NBA Round 1.

  • Open: Warriors -8 across the market.
  • Tickets: 72 percent on Warriors at the retail books.
  • Line at 7:50 PM: Warriors -6.5 at Pinnacle and Circa, -7 at DraftKings, -8 still posted at FanDuel.

72 percent of bettors took Golden State, but the number moved toward Houston by a point and a half on the sharp books. That is textbook reverse line movement. Cash distribution is heavy on Houston even though ticket count looks the other way. The fade is Warriors at -8, not the Houston number itself.

Match this against CLV after the bet to confirm the read. Houston +6.5 should close at +6 or tighter at the sharp books if the sharps were right.

Use it live

Every NuroPicks Pro and Elite pick ships with ticket-percent, money-percent, and line-movement deltas across the major books. Pair this with EV to confirm the price is still positive after the move and CLV to grade the read after the close.
